DEXA

What is a DEXA / BMD?

A Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is a low-dose form of x-ray that uses computer software to measure bone density i.e. the ‘thickness’ of your bones. It is used to diagnose, stage and monitor osteoporosis. Most DEXA scans take measurements from the Lumbar Spine (lower back) and Hips. It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis and to assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures. DEXA is simple, quick and noninvasive. It’s also the most accurate method for diagnosing osteoporosis. DEXA is not to be confused with CT BMD or QCT; which is performed on a CT (Computed Tomography) machine.

Are there any risks of DEXA?

DEXA, uses an extremely small dose of radiation (equivalent to less than one day’s exposure to natural radiation) to produce pictures of the inside of the body to measure bone loss. It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis and to assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures. DEXA is simple, quick and noninvasive. It’s also the most accurate method for diagnosing osteoporosis.
